Emergency
Routes
Phase 1
Phase I of
the City’s Emergency Traffic Ordinance
will be activated by The Street Department
when conditions make it necessary. When
Phase I is activated, you must have snow
tires or chains on your vehicle. If you
do not, and you become stalled on any street
or boulevard you could receive a ticket.
Phase
2
If you park on an Emergency route,
be especially aware of weather conditions.
After 2 inches of snow has fallen or is
forecast, the Public Works Department may
enact Phase II of the Emergency Snow Ordinance.
If Phase II is activated, and you fail to remove your car from the snow route, it will be ticketed and towed. The City will make every effort to give you at least 2 hours notice through the News Media, prior to Phase II activation. However, this may not always be possible or applicable to your situation.
The News Media will provide information primarily over the early morning, noon, evening, or late night news on radio and television. Notification will also come across Cablevision, through the Emergency Information Center at the Police, Fire, Communications Center.
The Street Department will make every effort to get to Citizen request’s as soon as possible as priorities allow. To place a request, call 271-4848 during Storm Emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Snow
Alert
A Snow Alert will be declared if
an extremely heavy snow blankets the City.
If a Snow Alert is declared, The Street
Department will plow all 8 Work Districts
after Emergency and Secondary Routes have
been plowed and the snow stops falling.
Every effort will be made to notify Citizens of the approximate time their District will be plowed. To expedite plowing operations, The Street Department will ask that all cars be removed from the street. If this is not possible, at least restrict parking to one side of the street in your neighborhood.
Since The Street Departments first priority is to Emergency Routes, there will be a delay in getting into residential streets. The snow will be deep and crews will need to get the snow to the curb. It is for this reason that we ask that cars be removed from the street where ever possible.
De-icing Operations
Anytime there
is freezing precipitation, Street Department
Crews will de-ice streets in the following
order:
Emergency Routes
Secondary Routes
Secondary follow-up Routes
District Routes
The de-icing will continue until all streets have been satisfactorily completed. If snow continues to fall, there may be a delay in getting to Citizen Request’s. The Street Departments first priority is to Emergency Routes.
Emergency
Assistance
The Street Department will assist an Ambulance
in getting to an emergency call, and then
to the Hospital when the call comes from
the Ambulance Dispatcher.
Snow Removal and Ice Control Equipment and crews are on the streets during storms to aid motorist’s in their travels. Their equipment is equipped with amber warning lights to identify them.
