1617 Faraon Street
the Marshall-Runcie Residence
Asking Price is negotiable
The spacious Victorian home at 1617 Faraon Street is known as the Marshall-Runcie Residence. It was constructed in 1885 for William St. John Elliot Marshall and his wife, Constance Blessing Runcie. A son, Elliot Marshall, was Mayor of St. Joseph, 1914-1922. Constance Runcie’s mother – Constance Fauntleroy Runcie -- had in 1859 organized the first woman’s club in the United States at New Harmony, Indiana. New Harmony was a utopian colony founded on socialist principles which attracted some of America’s best scientists and writers of the 19th century. Constance Runcie was in fact a granddaughter of New Harmony’s founder, Robert Owen. In St. Joseph, Constance F. Runcie in 1894 founded a women’s organization known as the Runcie Club which exists to this day. The Runcie Club is one of America’s oldest women’s organizations. In fact, the Runcie Club initially met at the home next door that was destroyed in a fire.
This unique Queen Anne style home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as contributing structure in the Harris Addition Historic District, so it is eligible for the Missouri State Historic Tax Credit Program. In 2005 a previous owner had put a new roof on the structure and made some other improvements before the property was foreclosed on. Most of the plaster and lath has been removed and the property will need new plumbing and electrical systems. This house will take allot of restoration work to complete, but it could be a real show place once finished. You can remodel the interior of this home to fit your specific needs, as it’s ready for a new owner to add utilities, sheetrock the interior walls and other general rehabilitation. The view from the second floor looking west, out across St. Joseph is breathtaking.
