As
the quality of life is the true pulse of a city, we continually strive
to provide a variety of experiences as a basic Parks and Recreation
goal. This department extends an unmatched quality of life and adds
to the St. Joseph economic base (tourism), via tournaments, festivals,
attractions and programs.
The St. Joseph Park System, listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, is comprised of approximately 1500 acres, 26 miles of parkways
and boulevards, containing 48 parks and related facilities. The Recreation
Division coordinates a wide range of programs, instructional, developmental
and leisure opportunities for all ages, interests and abilities.

Our earlier park planners not only left us with our unique parkway
system, but gave us the theme "American Naturalist." This
unique theme, combining European Renaissance architecture and American
nature is an inspiration to all. This heritage, of which we are all
proud, was given to us by positive and progressive visionaries. We
hope to maintain this attitude and add to the vision, with everyone's
help.
Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities departments have the ability
and resources to best deal with a variety of the social and emotional
human needs. When these needs are attended to in a proactive manner,
reactive measures are not necessary. A continuing goal of our department
is to provide the opportunity for each individual to have a healthy,
active, safe and enjoyable lifestyle.
